John Galliano seeks professional help in rehab

February 28th, 2011 by Rebecca Hull

So we’ve all heard the news about John Galliano – the designer who was fired from his position at fashion house Christian Dior, after accusations were made of him making anti-Semitic slurs – but new details have emerged on this story to reveal that the Briton is seeking professional help in rehab.

The 50-year-old designer (pictured) has reportedly been urged by friends, including models Kate Moss and Noami Campbel, to seek professional help for his alcohol problems following the breaking news of this week.

While Galliano still appears to have the support of his close friends, his supposed racist slurs have caused waves in the fashion industry.

Jewish actress Natalie Portman, who is the current face of Dior, immediately withdrew her interest in having any involvement with the designer, while Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld has now also publicly aired his views:

“The thing is, we are a business world where, especially today, with the internet, one has to be more careful than ever, especially if you are a publicly known person. Y

Icon of the Week: Tina Chow

February 28th, 2011 by Rebecca Hull

I find truth in any adage that usurps fashion and trends for style. Tina Chow for example mostly wore little make up and uniformed T-shirts with black Kenzo pants, and still managed to become one of Andy Warhol’s playthings. Pared-down elegance is a skill few have, but an important one nonetheless. Tina Chow went the extra mile and made simplicity her own.

Tina Chow was born Bettina Louise Lutz in Ohio in 1950. While she is widely assumed to be Chinese, she was actually of German and Japanese descent. Chow began her modelling career in her teenage years.

In 1972, Chow married Michael Chow of the Mr. C

Icon of the Week: Suzanne Lenglen

February 22nd, 2011 by Rebecca Hull

Athletics aside, I’ve always appreciated tennis for granting women flexibility for stylish sportswear. Come to think of it, I’m hard pressed to name another physical activity that utilizes headbands, dresses, pleated skirts and designer equipment bags as sporting culture. So naturally, we make a racket of oncourt looks. But far before Serena’s catsuits, Venus’ lacy negligee and Bethanie’s animal print, there was Suzanne Lenglen.

Lenglen was born in 1899 in Compiegne, some 70km north of Paris. By the age of eight, Lenglen showed early signs of athletic ability, excelling in running, swimming and cycling. Her first try at tennis was in 1910.

X Factor finalists One Direction release Forever Young autobiography

Since coming third in last year’s X-Factor competition One Direction have been lying low.

But with behind the scenes training Harry, Liam, Niall, Zayn, and Louis are now primed for a chart takeover.

And in spite of not yet having released an album, or indeed a single, a One Direction autobiography comes out today, entitled Forever Young.  Given their age, and lack of biography to speak of, it seems an appropriate, if somewhat ambitious, title.

The boys will be out in force, and armed with ink, signing fan copies of Forever Young up and down the country.

That’s certainly one way to keep their army of fans enthused. And with their debut single imminent, we expect an onslaught of
