Golden Globes 2011
Tinseltown’s A-Listers gathered at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 16th for the glitziest award ceremony of the year. Suffice it to say that armed with their own personal stylists, the stars arrived ready to show up the other. A difficult feat, seeing as it seems everyone got the memo that sequins and jewel tones were to be the recurring theme of the night. Fingers at the ready, we trawled the Internet in search of not only the best and worst dressed, but also everything in between. And the winners and losers of the day were…
The Kids Are All Right (Mums with Bumps)We wouldn’t go as far as to say that babies are to new Hollywood mothers what new arm candy, or the latest IT bag is to them. So we’ll just insinuate it. Stunner and Can-Do-No-Wronger Natalie Portman showed off her baby bump in a Viktor & Rolf powder pink dress, while 30 Rock star Jane Krakowski donned a slate-blue chiffon toga Badgley Mischka Couture number.

Relying on your looks will only get you so farMegan Fox disappointed in an Armani Prive gown that starkly contrasted her carefully crafted bad girl image – and not in the good way either. Covert Affairs star Piper Perabo similarly drew more yawns than envious stares in a black bow-topped Oscar de la Renta gown accessorized with a plain white clutch. Last but not least, remember Halle Berry’s maroon Elie Saab mesh dress that she wore back in ’02? In her place instead is a Halle Berry who deems it acceptable to be caught in a Nina Ricci piece with a mesh overlay that is far from age-appropriate.

Alice in Wonderland (we wonder too)Sometimes playing it safe can mean playing up classic looks. Sometimes it just means plain boring, and nothing more. We expected country songstress Carrie Underwood to choose a pastel palette – which she did, with a sparkly Badgley Mischka floor-length gown and accessorizing only with a leather clutch. Winner of Best Performance By An Actress In A Mini-Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television for her work in Temple Grandin, Claire Danes’s rosy pink Calvin Klein Collection gown does little for her figure. In the same vein, Jennifer Love Hewitt looked every single bit a bride and very little a Golden Globes nominee in her white Romana Keveza dress.

The Social Network (business in the front, party in the back)Deceivingly simple and minimalist gowns with large cut outs at the back studded the red carpet of the 68th Golden Globe Awards. It seems neither us nor Hollywood can get enough of this trend, with stars such as Anne Hathaway and Claire Danes favouring such back-baring cuts. My personal favourite dresser of the night would definitely have to be actress Emma Stone who chose to go modern minimalist in a peach Calvin Klein Collection number. Eva Longoria takes a leaf out of Victoria Beckham’s book with her choice of a black structured Zac Posen piece with a plunging neckline.

We also spied the celebs tweeting about their fashion experience at the Golden Globes 2011 which we thought was very apt for this category

Toy Story 3 ( some of the most playful outfits of the day)Christina Hendricks definitely knows how to turn heads. The voluptuous star of Golden Globes nominee for Best Television Series Drama Mad Men managed to stand out from the red carpet in her red, ruffled one-shoulder piece by Romona Keveza and her signature red locks. Right below the red, actress Kyra Sedgwick, nominated for her role in The Closer, embraced a boho vibe with her amber Emilio Pucci gown along with an arm full of stacked gold bangles. Completing the trio is Golden Globe favourite Black Swan star Mila Kunis in her brilliant emerald one-shouldered Vera Wang number.

Black Swan (beauties gliding on the red)Romanticized, ballet-inspired pieces come to mind at the mention of this year’s Golden Globe hotly favoured movie. Layered tulle, subtle peppering of sparkle and light, floaty materials were present on the red carpet at almost every turn – what one can only imagine to be the Mulleavy sisters’ utopia. Seasoned red carpet guest and head turner Scarlett Johansson dazzled in an intricately beaded dress with flutter sleeves by Elie Saab. Not a stranger to fashion, Leighton Meester went in a similar direction with a ruched nude Burberry Prorsum Pre-Fall 2011 gown. Star of TRON: Legacy Olivia Wilde glammed it up with a shimmery black tulle Marchesa gown with an antique gold sequined bustier top. Add to that a pair of killer gold Louboutins. The star joked that she was hiding Justin Bieber under the layers of tulle. Just as long as he doesn’t get out, we say.
